KEY EVENTS:

     Delila May Klinger was born on Friday, 9 April 1886 in Lee Township, Allegan County, Michigan.1,2 Delila and Daniel Leroy Grant, son of John Grant and Mary Alice Crane, were married on Wednesday, 3 July 1907 in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, by E. V. Armstrong, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The bride's brother and sister, Charles and Eva Klinger, acted as witnesses to the ceremony. Daniel's uncle, Horace William Crane, was married on the same day in Kalamazoo.3 Delila May Klinger died on 15 November 1948 at 122 W. Emerson St. in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, at 12:30 in the afternoon at age 62.4 Delila was buried on 17 November 1948 at Riverside Cemetery in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.5,4

NARRATIVE:

     Delila May Klinger was also known as Delila Mae Klinger.2 Her brother, Benjamin, died on 30 January 1899 in Lee Township, Allegan County, Michigan, at age 4 months and 14 days.6 On 1 June 1900 Delila appeared on the 1900 federal census in the household of her father, Joel Klinger, at 911 Gordon Pl. in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.7 Delila lived at 1129 Seminary Street (now Riverview Drive) in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, in 1909.8
     Her father, Joel Klinger, died on 20 June 1909 at 1129 Seminary Street (later 1227 Riverview Drive) in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, at age 57.2,9
     On 21 April 1910 Delila was enumerated as the head of the household at 711 Rivers St. in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, in the federal census of 15 April 1910. Daniel Leroy Grant, Frank Benjamin Rivers and Pearl Lena Rivers also lived there at the time of the enumeration. She was not employed at the time of the census. In addition, Romilda Buckollson, a 17-year old laundress born in Iowa, boarded with the family at the time of the census.10
     Her sister, Blanche Elizabeth Klinger, died on 24 February 1912 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, at age 40.11 Delila and Daniel Leroy Grant lived at 1126 1st in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, between 1913 and 1914.12,13 Delila and Daniel Leroy Grant lived at 1820 Humphrey in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, between 1915 and 1919.14,15,16,17
     Delila received a postcard from Frank Benjamin Rivers on 29 February 1916. In this postcard Frank wrote to his mother from his hospital bed at St. Joseph's Hospital in Chicago, we have learned that Frank underwent a surgical repair of his cleft palate. He was 13 years old at the time. He reassured his mother that he had visitors every Sunday "and when they come they bring me something." He also informed his mother that they would take out his "sticks [stitches]" in eight days, after which he would be able to return home.18
     Her mother, Susan Marie Young, died on 13 January 1920 in Kalamazoo, at age 68.19,2 On 27 January 1920 Delila appeared on the 1920 federal census in the household of her husband, Daniel Leroy Grant, at 1129 Seminary Street (later known as 1227 Riverview Drive) in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.20 Delila and Daniel Leroy Grant lived at 1129 Seminary Street (now Riverview Drive) in Kalamazoo, between 1921 and 1922.21,22 On 7 April 1930 Delila appeared on the 1930 federal census in the household of her husband, Daniel Leroy Grant, at 1227 Riverview Drive in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.23 According to this census, the family rented their home for $10 a month. We are also told that the family owned a radio.23
     Her brother, George Lewis Klinger, died on 8 December 1930 in Kalamazoo, at age 56.24
     Her son, Frank, died on 15 March 1936 at Fairmount Hospital in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, at age 33.25
     Her brother, Robert John Klinger, died on 26 July 1942 at 226 Burr Oak St. in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, at age 66.26,27 Delila May Klinger was a member of the Rose Street Church of God.28
     Her brother, Albert Klinger, died on 8 October 1945 at 226 Burr Oak St. in Kalamazoo, at age 62.29 Delila May Klinger was ill with hypertension between 1946 and 1948.4 Delila lived at 122 W. Emerson St. in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, in 1948.4
     Her brother, Earl Henry Klinger, died on 24 May 1948 in Washington at age 68.30 The cause of her death was cerebral hemorrhage.4
